About us
Our academy
Founded in 2020 by Guru Umamaheswari Srinivassane with one aim, to bring the spirit of Indian classical dance and music to young minds, without commercialism.
The art form
What is Bharatanatyam?
Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dance forms of India. It originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu more than two thousand years ago and is one of the eight classical dance forms recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. It combines grace and beauty with precision, strength and expression, and it carries South Indian spiritual and devotional themes.
Our approach
How we teach
- We follow traditional Bharatanatyam without diluting its form.
- Students progress through a full, structured Margam, from basic steps (adavus) to complete performance items.
- Training covers both practice and theory: rhythm (thalam), music, expression (abhinaya) and posture.
- Every student gets regular stage experience, because performing is part of learning.
- Advanced workshops are conducted regularly by senior gurus from India and Singapore.
Our traditions
Vijayadashami & Vidyarambham
Every year on Vijayadashami, the last day of Navarathiri, our students gather for Vidyarambham, the auspicious beginning of learning. Students place their salangai (ankle bells) at the prayer place, offer flowers, and seek the Guru's blessings. The Guru then teaches each group a new step to mark the next stage of their journey, and the day ends with sweets for everyone.
